What to Avoid: Gifts That Don't Last
After three kids and countless birthdays and holidays, here are the gifts I've learned to avoid (or at least think twice about):
-
Toys with 100 tiny pieces: You'll be finding them for years. In your vacuum. In your shoes. Everywhere.
-
Super loud toys with no volume control: Protect your sanity and check for an OFF switch
-
Toys that require constant supervision: If you can't trust them alone with it, it's more work for you
-
Trendy characters they've never heard of: They won't care, I promise
-
Toys that require lots of batteries: Expensive to maintain and inevitably die at the worst times
-
Anything with glitter: Just... no. Unless you hate the gift recipient 🤣

Frequently Asked Questions About Toddler Gifts
What are the best types of gifts for toddlers?
The best toddler gifts are ones that grow with your child — toys that encourage imagination, movement, and independence. Think building sets, pretend play items, art supplies, and ride-on toys. Bonus points if it keeps them busy for more than five minutes so you can sip your coffee while it’s still hot ☕️.
What are good non-toy gifts for toddlers?
Some of my favorite non-toy gifts include quality pajamas, personalized step stools, toddler backpacks, cozy blankets, nightlights, water bottles, and room decor. Books are always a win too! We also love experience gifts like zoo memberships, museum passes, or swim lessons. Practical gifts might not seem exciting, but parents appreciate them, and toddlers love anything that makes them feel "big."
How much should I spend on a toddler gift?
You don’t have to spend a fortune! Most toddler gifts fall in the $15–$50 range. Seriously, some of the most-loved gifts in our house cost under $15. For friends' kids or less formal occasions, $10-25 works great. Focus on quality and longevity — a few well-loved toys beat a room full of random stuff any day. A $10 book your toddler reads every night for a year is way more valuable than a $50 toy they ignore after a week.
What toys should I avoid for toddlers?
Based on my experience with toys for toddlers, avoid options with too many small pieces (choking hazard and cleanup nightmare), super loud toddler toys without volume control (I am looking at your corn popper), anything with glitter (trust me), toys that need constant supervision, and trendy character toys they don't actually know. Also, skip toys that require lots of batteries—they're expensive to maintain and always die at the worst time. Look for toys with an OFF switch and easy-to-clean materials.
Are experience gifts good for toddlers?
Absolutely! Some of my kids' best "gifts" were experiences. Every year we get a Zoo membership and a membership to their favorite local museum. Both of these gifts are great annual gifts for years to come. Swim lessons, music classes, or gymnastics classes would be a blast too. You can even think about planning a special day at the park or playground to create memories that last way longer than toys. For very young toddlers, they might not "get it" in the moment, but by age 2-3, the excitement of a special outing is just as thrilling as unwrapping a toy. Plus, experiences don't create clutter!
What are the best gifts for a toddler who has everything?
We struggled with this with my youngest daughter. She had a million hand-me-downs and still received plenty of gifts from friends of family, so here is my advice. When a toddler seems to have everything, think consumables (art supplies, playdough, bath bombs), experiences (memberships, classes, special outings), books (you can never have too many), or practical items they need anyway (clothes, shoes that fit). Consider contributing to a bigger item with other family members, or focus on unique, quality gifts like wooden toys, personalized items, or handmade gifts. Sometimes the best gift is something that encourages outdoor play or family time together.
